How to Begin the Course in Miracles Lessons

What if you don’t know how to meditate or to still your mind?  I know how this is, when I first started doing A Course in Miracles, back in 1989, I had no idea how to meditate.  I only knew that I needed help, I was anxious, depressed and the Course lessons told me what to do, so I followed the instructions.

  • You need motivation:  I wanted peace, I wanted to be free of fear, so the motivation was already in place.  I was seriously in need of peace because I had been depressed for six months and nothing was helping.
  • How much time was required?  Five minutes in the morning, and five minutes at night.  No big time investment here…and yet, within a few months, I was feeling much happier and much less depressed and very confident that I could do this Course.

How to begin to practice A Course In Miracles Lessons:

  1. So, first, just read the lesson, it’s okay if you don’t understand it.  Really.  It’s not important at this stage.
  2. Follow the instructions, do the mind searching for 5 minutes.
  3. Write down the title of the lesson and take it with you on a sticky note or card to repeat throughout the day. Your subconscious mind will hear it every time you repeat the thought to yourself.   This is how you change your mind, one day at a time, one thought at a time.

 

The Course itself is undoing your thought patterns that create fear, anxiety and depression.  It will work if you spend the five to ten minutes per day. Also, as with learning an instrument, the more you practice, the better the results.  So, within a few months I spent probably more than the 10 minutes per day.  I had a lot of motivation, since depression and anxiety were so prevalent in my experience.

As a musician I knew that a few minutes of practice each day became exponential over time and that a scale I couldn’t play yesterday, after working on it for a little while, the next day I could master it without a problem. How?  It is how your brain learns.

Within a few months, I experience changes within myself, I was calmer, I had more hope, more lightness in my mind.  This gave me more confidence and ignited my personal desire to do the Course, I liked how I felt and I liked knowing that my life had a purpose and a structure to it.

Key:  Repetition makes reinforcement.  Results encourage more practice. 

The key to happiness is simply repeating these thoughts that retrain your mind to think differently.  When you begin to feel better, you will have more motivation.  Yes, keep it up and don’t get discouraged if you aren’t completely fearless right away.

It’s all laid out for you, you just have to repeat the lesson to yourself…each one can be your personal mantra for the day.  Just try it and see how you feel.

Get Rid of Fear Once and for All…

The secret to living without fear lies in one thing only:  your desire to get rid of it. All creative and healing endeavors require you to move through fear.  All desires of the heart to grow, to give and to love in all conditions require courage and faith. Remember, love and fear cannot coexist, as Jesus states this very early on in the Urtext in the section called Fear as Lack of Love:

Fear cannot be Christ-controlled, but it CAN be self-controlled. Fear is always associated with what does not matter. It prevents Me from controlling it. The correction is therefore a matter of YOUR will, because its presence shows that you have raised the UNIMPORTANT to a higher level than it warrants. You have thus brought it under your will, where it DOES NOT belong. This means YOU feel responsible for it. Here’s a proven way to free yourself from fear within a few minutes when it arises:

  1. First of all, know you made it up.  Its unimportant, but you think its real, and you will have fear because you forgot you are a mind, not a body.  It is up to you to release it. Resistance is fear, but Jesus states in the New Testament, resist not evil.  It’s unimportant.   Don’t resist what is silly. Yes, you do experience fear and it will arise when you feel the threat to your survival…yet if you want total freedom and happiness, just recognize it and see it as growth toward freedom. When you accept that it is fear that causes you to grow, you will not listen to it.
  2. Deep breathe for 10 minutes. Fear has no real source because all fear is based upon a lie.  There is nothing to fear.  You have made a state of separation, you think its true, but, you are not the thing that fears, you are the spirit beyond all the emotions. You can breathe deeply for 10 minutes deep into your belly.  Alllow it to release and if your mind wanders, just breathe.  If thoughts appear, just say “oh well” and breathe some more. Try it.
  3. See yourself moving through the veil of fear, or lifting it off you.  Can you imagine what it would be like to easily remove this fear from your mind?  It is work to free yourself from fear, but its better than listening to fearful thoughts. They only make you crazy.
  4. Listen to your heart, not your head.  Get quiet and go within for a moment.  Really let go and ask for help to see the situation differently.  God wills you perfect happiness, this means you can trust Him.  Listen to His voice within you. Ask and listen, and you will receive the answer from deep within you. It takes a little willingness and great persistence to set yourself free.
  5. Have courage to face your fear and go within.  Listening to God’s guidance or the small voice inside, the one that speaks to you softly, encouraging you. Listening to this voice is the only way out of fear forever.  As you get comfortable with the practice, when fear arises, you will know what to do.  Growth is accomplished by releasing fear and learning to trust.

10 Myths About A Course in Miracles

Do you want to know more about A Course in Miracles, but are afraid to ask?  Don’t know where to begin? Find it daunting?  Think its too New Age?  Read on.  I dispel some common misconceptions about it and provide a bit of a primer for beginning to do the lessons:

  1. You have to read that whole big book in order to understand what it’s all aboutThis is false and you will be delighted to find out that to actually do the Course, you only have to read and practice one lesson per day.  This takes about 10 minutes.  Remember, your understanding is not necessary.  Your willingness is. You need a miracle when you are unhappy.
  2. You have to be quiet and not react to everyone around you.  Well, are you always going to be non-judgmental?  It is almost impossible, so don’t try to purify your thoughts, that’s the job of the Holy Spirit.  The Course is on the level of the mind.  You are responsible for your thoughts and this is what it means when it states that the entire world is going on in your own mind, because you have projected it from an idea of you being separate.  In an objective world, where separateness rules, there can be no peace.
  3. How can I not react in this crazy world? You will not be able to.  You don’t have to not react, but if you practice the lessons, you begin to realize that judgment is a toy, and you are playing a game with yourself.  You can just as easily decide to see you have a choice to either stay in reaction or use the lessons to help you stop, ask for help and allow a miracle to occur.
  4. Becoming enlightened is boring because you would be in la-la land unaffected by anything.  It is far from boring to be in a state of ecstatic love all the time, and laughing at all the craziness, knowing full well that you are dreaming.  You will love everyone a lot more knowing you don’t have to be offended by them.  If you are offended, you might want to laugh at yourself a lot more.
  5. The Course says that you just have to forgive all the time, and not care if people are attacking or not respectful of you. Not true, if you knew you were not separate from anyone or anything, you would do everything in your power to love and extend that love from within you.  Love doesn’t get offended, but if you are offended, you have the choice to change your thought about it.  A major idea of the Course is that God wills for you perfect happiness.  Can you be happy if you are being mistreated?  No, a healthy boundary is what love is.
  6. The Course is new age thinking.  Actually the Course is harder than most teachings, because it is about taking full responsibility for your thoughts, releasing resentment and forgiving.  Just like the core teachings Jesus taught in the New Testament, his Course is about learning to love God with all your heart, mind and soul and your neighbor as yourself. It is not easy.
  7. Reading the Course will help me have a more successful life.  This is true only if you define success as being in a state of happiness and freedom.  Because you learn to forgive, it will enhance your ability to love more and become as a little child and pray without ceasing. You will become happy when you realize happiness is your natural state no matter who you are with, what you are doing and how much worldly success you have.
  8. I have give up the world if I do the Course.  What is the world? The world is your projection and if you do surrender your thoughts about it, you will experience more and more peace. The goal is peace.  You can become happy even if you only spend 10 minutes a day reading it.  Most people feel it brings them peace, without realizing how that happens and are grateful for the miraculous healing the Course brings about in them.
  9. A miracle is a physical healing. Not always, it can be a shift in your consciousness that causes you to become happier and less resentful and fearful.  This is a miracle of the mind and this shift is a correction of the fear that may result in a physical healing.  Everything starts in the mind.  The thought of illness comes before the illness.  The idea of healing comes before the healing occurs.   This is because cause and effect are not apart.
  10. If I wake up and become enlightened, I won’t be in a body anymore.  Not true, you would just be aware that it’s a dream and you are awake within this dream.  You will usually feel the need to help others awaken and your life becomes one of service to help humanity in whatever capacity will bring you the most joy.

4 Reasons to Forgive

If you are harboring resentments with someone, which you probably are, even without consciously being aware of it, you need to go within yourself and ask:  Is it worth it?  Does hanging onto this really help me?

The past is over and yet your body is a memory machine, your subconscious mind remembers everything that hurt you, until you reveal these hurts to yourself by allowing the memory to come into awareness. Beneath the surface could be the root of a pattern that has been troubling you for a long time.  Only when you allow it into your conscious mind can it be healed.  What you keep hidden cannot be healed, simply because it is hidden.  From yourself.

So, for instance, I recently remembered something very significant from my past that was traumatic for me during adolescence.  As I looked at it, I saw that it had affected every relationship I had with a male since then.  It made sense then, that my pain came from me, from my memory of the event and that in the revealing of it, I was able to make another choice.  I could choose to heal this event, to forgive the perpetrator, even for something so egregious as molestation.

I had not consciously ever looked at how this affected my life until now, while I am undergoing a breakup.  The pain was triggered by the breakup of a marriage, and when I allowed it into my memory, I realized how much that event had affected me throughout my life.  Then came the realization that I didn’t have to let this continue.

What truly astonished me was how I had buried it and dismissed it as insignificant, until this moment. I have been on a healing path for many years and this horrendous occurrence had finally come into the present moment for healing!

So, here are four reasons to forgive:

  1. You will discover something about yourself you need to know, that you may not be aware of until this moment.
  2. You allow the buried emotions are caused by your memory, so taking responsibility for the memory, not the event, allows for true permanent healing.
  3. In the revealing of the memory, you open up to the possibility of release forever from the event.  Then the pattern stops.
  4. If you don’t do it, you keep the pattern going.  So, what have you got to lose?  Just painful memories from the past that keep haunting you.

Freedom from the past is worth every bit of pain you have to go through. Otherwise, you will continue to be affected by the past subconsciously and it will color every relationship you have.  I have found that it is  time to love myself and give myself the gift of healing, so that I don’t have to repeat these painful memories again.  It is a gift of love to myself.

It is easy to release the cause of your pain, once it is staring at you and you can see it all clearly for the first time.  You will be given the opportunity to  forgive any time you feel the twinge of anger, the need to judge someone, the desire to hate, or to get revenge.

The path of least resistance is to accept that growth and healing is inevitable.  You do want freedom from pain, and it makes sense then to allow it to occur.

Don’t resist evil.  Don’t resist pain, don’t resist!  Don’t judge yourself for having learned this way, the experience of healing is worth it.

Now it is obvious to me why every major spiritual teaching is based upon this one thing: forgiveness.  IT WORKS if you work it.

20 Ways to Get Through a Breakup

In the midst of a breakup, you can get very confused, or you can use this list of ways to get through it.  This is a way to speed up your awakening and healing from relationships.  Forgiveness is key now but it might feel impossible to you.  That is totally understandable.

My husband announced two weeks ago that he didn’t want to live with me any more.  I have found myself in shock, anger, guilt, rage, fear, frustration and dismay.  Here is how I am getting through it.  It is working for me and helping me to move quickly into joy even in the midst of this painful situation.

  1. Stay focused on you.  Don’t focus on the partner and what he or she did to you. Let them be.  You have no control over them, but you do have control over your mind and how you handle this situation.
  2. Make a list of things you have to take care of now.  It could be to find a place to live, to work (if you work at home), organize a move, decide what possessions you want to keep.  Don’t worry about this too much, you can always replace stuff.
  3. Be very focused on your mental state.  Do the lessons of the Course, read Chapter 17 The Holy Relationship.  We use our relationships to heal and to awaken from the dream of separation.  Use this as an opportunity to get serious and be persistent on your path.
  4. Read one lesson per day, or read the first 50 lessons from A Course in Miracles in short form (reviews) every day. I like the reviews because it can be done in 20 minutes.
  5. Allow the emotions to surface, but don’t wallow in them.  You can read and repeat the key lessons like “There is nothing my holiness cannot do.  I am as God created me.  There is nothing to fear. “
  6. Breathe deeply and use this meditation to release emotions and the tendency to blame.  Panic will not help right now, when it comes up, do this quick 25 minute healing to release the emotional states.  Resentment is not going to help you right now, but it will come up and this will help to let it go quickly.
  7. Ask for help.  Many supportive friends and family will come to your aid, people you never thought would be so caring.  Allow them to help you right now because you need them and it alleviates the loneliness and fear. You are supported by God right now and your friends and family want to help you.
  8. Go within.  Write down all that you are feeling and focus on what you want now  .  Don’t listen to everyone and their opinions, this will just confuse you. Don’t let other people’s breakups or stories influence you.
  9. Write down the “old story”, this what you have been living regarding your self, partner, career, finances, and home.  Now burn it.  Now write down the “new story”, aim high and imagine what you want right now in all these aspects.  This will help to let go of the past and move on quickly and stay focused on YOU, and what you really want now.  Read it over and over every day.
  10. Pray each day for guidance and to be shown that you are loved and taken care of. The universe loves you and is giving you this opportunity to speed up your process of awakening.  Allow the guidance and the freedom from fear that it brings each moment.
  11. The blessing in this situation is:  There is always a blessing for you in a crisis…write it down.  This keeps you focused on what you are grateful for, allowing for more appreciation.   Read it over every morning.
  12. Focus on your abilities and strengths. This helps when the critical judging thoughts come in that eat away at your self-esteem.
  13. Don’t allow the judgments and self-criticism.  Write down all your wonderful qualities and things you have achieved in your life.
  14. Keep an open heart and mind.  When you close down and feel the pain, know that it is changing.  It is important to feel the emotions but know that you are not your emotions and feelings. You can stay open to receive more healing and more grace.
  15. Stay hydrated.  Don’t reach for alcohol or coffee right now…I know its tempting, but it brings your body into stress and your emotions will be harder to calm down.  Drink tons of water!
  16. Exercise.  This really keeps the stress out of your body.  Go for a run or walk every morning for at least 30 minutes. It helps to know you care about yourself right now.  Take care of the body and the mind.
  17. Take a break from your location.  Book a trip and give yourself time to slow down and go within.  I am going to a part of the country I love for 5 days and seeing my two grown boys. I can feel how much I need this right now.
  18. Try this worksheet from Byron Katie for self-examination. A simple four step process to let go of your painful thoughts.
  19. Don’t project all your thoughts onto your partner.  Let them go for now.  Be steady and look at your own mind.  Remember, self responsibility is key.
  20. Give yourself a break, its time to list all the things you love and and remember what brings you joy and do at least 3 of those things each day.

When life choices seem daunting in the midst of chaos, know that there are no mistakes.  You will make choices and then learn from them. Honor your progress and your path right now.  You want freedom and this is giving it to you in ways you cannot fathom right now.

Although the pain will surface, feel it and use it to free you today.  It is helping you to become more compassionate toward yourself and others. Stay humble. Focus on this moment right now.  Not next week, not next year.  RIGHT NOW…it is the only time there is and it is where your healing resides.

The End of Suffering

You are as God created you, and so is every living thing you look upon, regardless of the images you see.

This sentence from Chapter 31, The Final Vision, states that what you behold as sickness, pain, weakness, suffering and loss “is but temptation to perceive yourself defenseless and in hell. Yield not to this, and you will see all pain, in every form, wherever it occurs but disappear as mists before the sun. A miracle has come to heal God’s Son, and close the door upon his dreams of weakness, opening the way to his salvation and release.”

So the miracle occurs when you ask for it, and you get on your knees and ask to see it all differently, and your misperceptions are healed. The miracle happens because the entire dream is made up by you, and if that is not acceptable to you right now, fine. But know that ultimately, you will accept it, because not to is too painful.

Staying a victim of a world of perception is not really a wonderful or even viable option. It will become too painful to hold onto this idea, because victimization is not happy, it doesn’t work. Accepting responsibility for the thoughts you are thinking is the only way out. Pain releases when you ask for help and accept the help given. The world of love and light opens up in response to your call.

I know because it happened to me.

I was in a state of total despair and depression, and once I started doing the lessons, my entire being changed from darkness to exiliration and fearlessness. Over time, the whole purpose of my life changed from a selfish pursuit of the things of the world, to come alive and to awaken and become totally free, mentally and emotionally and spiritually.

In the act of relinquishment, my ideas of suffering were all burned up and taken from me by the grace of the light all around me, the Christ Mind. It is what I am and what you are, so it is inevitable that you will accept it at some point.

Don’t be discouraged if you have been at this for a long time and still feel pain. I know how that is, but I also know that it is a trick of ego mind to think you have to wallow around in it. You do have choice.

You always have the power of decision at your disposal.

The question then becomes, when? When will you choose to become free, fearless, in a state of love and harmony, knowing who you are, extending that light into the world. When? When you have had enough suffering I suppose.

This does require that you take time to do the mind training, that you spend time in prayer, that you serve your brother, that you give of yourself ceaselessly. Because that is the key to happiness, giving constantly to awaken and help other to do the same. A spiritual focus is imperative to a happy, fulfilled life. Your purpose is to awaken and free your mind if you decide that it is. And why not? Misery and death do not exist. God has already saved you from your little nightmare.

Nothing is accomplished by an untrained, undisciplined mind. Peace does come when all need for conflict is given up. When this happens can be determined by you. How much do you want peace? How much energy are you willing to devote to it?

Repeat this prayer in times of temptation to believe in your suffering:

I am as God created me.
His Son can suffer nothing.
And I AM His Son.

When I am healed, I am not healed alone

Healing is freedom. It is shared. Healing is communication, healing is strength.

How wonderful to know that you only need ask for healing for it to occur. It isn’t hard, it doesn’t take time. It comes when you want the alternative to your dreams of fear or suffering.

This is the best part, that “as you let yourself be healed, you see all those around you, or who cross your mind, or whom you touch, or those who you seem to have no contact with you, healed along with you.”

That sounds like everyone. This occurs because of the Oneness of creation. When one part is healed, all is healed. It is a quantum idea. The whole is more than the sum of its parts. One part is the whole.

“Those who are healed become the instruments of healing. Nor does time elapse between the instant they are healed, and all the grace of healing it is given them to give.”

When you ask for healing, realize that it is for all the world, not just for you alone. When you attest to the healing that you receive, it empowers others to do the same and to experience the grace that your healing brings to all the world.

God only gives, therefore, you can only give. When you are healed of false identity, of false ideas, of sickness, pain and death, you are asking that the inevitable occur, therefore, it cannot fail. Don’t be fooled by continuing symptoms…acceptance of the healing comes when it is done so without fear.

“There is one thought in particular that should be remembered throughout the day. It is a thought of pure joy; a thought of peace, a thought of limitless release, limitless because all things are freed within it.” Your healing frees your mind along with your brother’s mind. You share this mind, because you are created by Oneness. The love of God created you and you did not make yourself. You simply put yourself to sleep and are waking up now.

Fear of the love of God is insane. The love of God protects you from your own self-constructed identity. This is not you. You are protected from your dream, because although it feels very real to you, it is still a dream. You have been protected from your illusions of yourself. That is why you need only ask for healing to experience it. This protection is where your safety lies. It lies not in illusions, but in the awareness of perfect oneness with your Creator.

Mercy and the grace of healing comes when you accord yourself worthy of mercy. That is why forgiveness is the key to happiness. Do you see how simple is the dream undone when you decide you want it undone…it is because it has already been undone.

It is accomplished already…because Jesus resolved it for you and you need only accept it for yourself. Yes it is that simple, and yes it also means you give up every thought of attack, of fear, of anger, of guilt and of suffering. It is work because you have been asleep for such a long time. Dreaming of all these horrible states of mind. None of which are real. You don’t deserve it, you are innocent of all that you have condemned yourself.

When you become so tired of maintaining an illusion of yourself, you will awaken and be free. The dream is a happy dream when you become willing to ask for help with every trivial detail of your life. When you allow yourself to be shown the way, when you stop thinking you can do it all alone. Because you are never alone.

When you are healed, you are not healed alone. Give it up. Its time to come into the light now and recognize your oneness with all Creation. It is always awaiting your decision to be free.
