7 Steps to Use Faith to Change Your Life

Do you hate it when people say: keep the faith?  Do you feel they are just being a Pollyanna? Keep the faith, yeah right.

I used to feel this way, how ridiculous, I thought.  They don’t know my story of how things didn’t work out the way I wanted.  How I am so unhappy because, well…you can fill in the blank. Lots of things don’t work the way I want them to.

Keep the faith? In what?  When I was depressed I truly couldn’t see what I was supposed to have faith in.

What does it mean to have faith, really?  I wanted proof.  I wanted to know that there is a reason to have faith.  In what? Not in something outside of me that will wave a magic wand and everything will be honky dory.  I’m not that silly.

So, if I’m honest, in my current life, something could be better.  I could have more abundance for instance.

What do I do? I get frustrated, then I use that to demand a change.

This happened just the other day, I lost my bank card and didn’t know it and was on my way home to Massachusetts from visiting my kids in NYC.  I went to buy gas and there was no card. Gone.  I looked everywhere in the car, the wallet, my pockets.  Nope, not there.

I asked the clerk if they would take a check, they said no.  I stood there, not knowing what to do.  I don’t use credit cards anymore, so I waited and just got quiet.  Finally the clerk personally gave me $10 and I wrote him a check.  I got back to my car and screamed…this is enough!  I have had enough of this!

Everything shifted within me.  Without that frustration, I would stay in fear and just accept the situation, whether I like it or not.  Do I like where I am?  No. Time to make a change.

How about you? Let’s get honest.  Is your current life satisfying you?  Yes or no?

How do you perceive yourself? Lacking? Doubtful? Frustrated?

Frustration can be used to bring you into a desire for something else. In that sense, it can be extremely useful.  It challenges you to grow, to expand…to make a change.

Do you want more joy, more freedom of mind, more money? You simply open to an idea that your life could be better.  Here’s the key: you don’t have to know how.

That’s where faith comes in. Yet is faith only a wish for an outcome?

When Jesus healed the woman who touched his garment, he said, “by your faith are you healed”. It seems to me he was praising her for believing in him and in his God-given power of healing. Faith healing is a powerful thing and could happen at any moment. The fact is that she knew it was possible, certain even, so she was healed.

So, faith is simply a belief in something possible that is not currently in your experience.

You accept, first of all, that you don’t see everything, your perception and your hearing are too narrow. You don’t have the big picture.

So you begin by having a little faith that there might be something better, that anything is possible.  Maybe if you have faith then miracles could happen, which are sudden shifts in perception within your own mind.

But where are you?  Do you doubt this?  Are you using the power of your mind to decide what you want, to have faith in it, and to allow it?

Here are 7 steps to use faith to change something:

  1. I make a decision to let this change first within me.
  2. I ask for what I desire to occur, (I’m very specific about what it is).
  3. I make sure I am not blocking or resisting it. If I feel resistance, I repeat “unblock”.
  4. I have faith that it is already happening in divine timing.
  5. I imagine what it feels like to have it happen.
  6. I give thanks for it being accomplished.
  7. I let go of any attachment to the outcome.

How does this work?

I first allow the change to take place inside, I change my belief about it.  I just decide I will allow it. (I am pretty good at this, it has been my whole life’s purpose to learn how to change beliefs).

I don’t resist change. It’s effortless because I’m not resisting. I let go so that the situation changes without my help.  I allow reality to be what it is.

As within, so without.  Everything is possible.  I don’t demand, I just ask, trust and let go.  I stay uncertain and notice the change that is occurring in me.  How do I feel about it now?

The outer reality reflects the inner…your mind affects your experience.  This is quantum thinking which simply means that cause and effect are not apart. You thoughts affect your experience in every moment. So use them to help you!

Because you are a creator, you have the power to decide what you want to experience.   But you have to allow it, to release your control and your concern over how or when it is happening or not.

What gets in the way?

Your own disbelief in the power of your mind.   In other words, your own doubt.  Doubt or faithlessness kills your dream of happiness.  “Umm maybe it won’t work”, you can hear yourself say. If you think it won’t, guess what?

Doubt is a killer.

No one can stop you from thinking thoughts of lack or doubt. No one can deny you the thoughts you are making up, because you have the power to think them.  The only question is, do you like the result?

So, when you kill faith by doubting, you suffer the consequences.  It has nothing to do with anyone else. You could stop doubting and trust.  Just think a different thought.

I trust in the power of my mind to heal and be healed.

Faith energizes the idea that all possibilities exist, because in truth, all things are possible.

If you trust that all is well and have confidence and faith that things are working out, it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Say to yourself: I have faith that all things are working out for me. I trust in the benevolence of the Universe to bring me into greater happiness every day.  I am sustained by the love of God.

How does it feel to say this?

A faithful person brings light and blessings to everyone she meets. She feels energetic, calm, trusting in the power of life itself, to regenerate, to shift, change and expand.

Wouldn’t it be wonderful to be like a child who knows that love is what she is? Remember how simple life seemed then?  You were open to new things, you got excited with new ideas, new projects, and new friends.

So when you have faith in goodness and love, it becomes proof  that you feel better when you have faith.  Do it for this reason alone…it feels good.

You learn to simply allow life to unfold as it does.  You don’t argue with reality, you just allow it to be what it is.  You accept it, trust in it and live in the present moment. I know it seems crazy, but it works. I have proved it over and over again.

You do get to have and be all that you desire, because you already are, whether you know it or not.

Faith in a benevolent Universe, at the very least, will bring you hope rather than doubt. It feels better in the moment that you think these thoughts:  I know it’s possible. I don’t know how it will work out, but I believe it will. I’m excited about it!

Your happiness is coming to you right now in ways you can’t even imagine. Don’t block it with doubt.

When I think I am not where I want to be, I suffer. When I accept that I am in the right place at the right time, I feel great! So, even if it doesn’t turn out how I want, I’m happy.

Happiness is not earned, it is recognized and accepted. You could be happy right now if you would just decide to be.  Even if you’re depressed, love your depression, embrace it…be totally depressed. Allow it to bring you to the bottom, to the crux of the problem, which is always you, your thoughts, your perception.

The fix is in.

The problem is that you never question the reality of your problem. You insist on it and don’t experience that can be resolved. Have faith, faith that it is possible because if you did, just for an instant, you would have a new experience.

Your life would change and you would be amazed at how easily it worked.

Belief is powerful indeed.

How to Begin the Course in Miracles Lessons

What if you don’t know how to meditate or to still your mind?  I know how this is, when I first started doing A Course in Miracles, back in 1989, I had no idea how to meditate.  I only knew that I needed help, I was anxious, depressed and the Course lessons told me what to do, so I followed the instructions.

  • You need motivation:  I wanted peace, I wanted to be free of fear, so the motivation was already in place.  I was seriously in need of peace because I had been depressed for six months and nothing was helping.
  • How much time was required?  Five minutes in the morning, and five minutes at night.  No big time investment here…and yet, within a few months, I was feeling much happier and much less depressed and very confident that I could do this Course.

How to begin to practice A Course In Miracles Lessons:

  1. So, first, just read the lesson, it’s okay if you don’t understand it.  Really.  It’s not important at this stage.
  2. Follow the instructions, do the mind searching for 5 minutes.
  3. Write down the title of the lesson and take it with you on a sticky note or card to repeat throughout the day. Your subconscious mind will hear it every time you repeat the thought to yourself.   This is how you change your mind, one day at a time, one thought at a time.

 

The Course itself is undoing your thought patterns that create fear, anxiety and depression.  It will work if you spend the five to ten minutes per day. Also, as with learning an instrument, the more you practice, the better the results.  So, within a few months I spent probably more than the 10 minutes per day.  I had a lot of motivation, since depression and anxiety were so prevalent in my experience.

As a musician I knew that a few minutes of practice each day became exponential over time and that a scale I couldn’t play yesterday, after working on it for a little while, the next day I could master it without a problem. How?  It is how your brain learns.

Within a few months, I experience changes within myself, I was calmer, I had more hope, more lightness in my mind.  This gave me more confidence and ignited my personal desire to do the Course, I liked how I felt and I liked knowing that my life had a purpose and a structure to it.

Key:  Repetition makes reinforcement.  Results encourage more practice. 

The key to happiness is simply repeating these thoughts that retrain your mind to think differently.  When you begin to feel better, you will have more motivation.  Yes, keep it up and don’t get discouraged if you aren’t completely fearless right away.

Key: This is a universal course in the awakening of your mind that is designed to save you time. 

It’s all laid out for you, you just have to repeat the lesson to yourself…each one can be your personal mantra for the day.  Just try it and see how you feel.

7 Steps to Finding Great Love

What is great love?  Do you want it, do you have it?  Do you feel you have missed the boat or that you are seeking and not finding it?  Guess what?  You may be looking in the wrong place.

What if you were absolutely certain that love was not something to find, but already resides within and you felt it every day and every moment?   You were certain of the security of love, of the constant abiding love that you are?  Would your life be different? You bet it would.  This is not a theory, but a practice that requires your attention and dedication.

I always thought if I found the right partner, I would have someone to share my life with and then would be happy.  So I kept looking for the right one and married three times.  I don’t regret any of it, believe me.

My biggest lesson has been to realize that love isn’t something to seek.  I have been through the loss of partners and lost custody of children, lost my teacher, both parents, my sister when I was 4, and they all taught me the same lesson:  I am the thing I seek.

How did I learn this?  The hard way, through lots of experience of loving and losing and then finally discovering the secret to the universe.

What helps me the most?

  1. Meditation and mind training – Most of the time we just react to things that happen, but when you put yourself first and meditate, you find that your mind can change. Your thoughts are the problem, and the release of them is the solution. A Course in Miracles is a proven method, if you start with one lesson per day, it is guaranteed to change you. 5 minutes per day to a new you?  How hard is that?
  2. Find your light – The big revelation comes when you open to the possibility that your problem has already been solved. You may not know this yet, but the Master Jesus taught us this important lesson:  You are the light of the world, you have all power, and you can accomplish anything you choose.  You know it to be true when you ask to be healed of the deep subconscious pain of being separate.
  3. Know you cannot lose it – if you find love within yourself, you cannot ever lose it, because it isn’t apart from you.  This brings immense freedom and joy.
  4. Realize your life is eternal – Life isn’t of time, it isn’t going to end, the you that thinks you are separate is the problem, but when you get to the bottom of your pain, it will finally vanish, freeing you from the idea that you could ever be alone, lost, or in need of anything. But you have to go to the depths of your denial to become free from this state of mind.  Ask yourself every day:  who am I?
  5. Embrace change and free the fear – I know it seems hard to embrace the unknown, but really?  If what you know has brought you suffering, loss and death, then what have you got to lose by embracing the unknown…what if it opens up your heart and mind to a new experience of you?
  6. Decide for peace – if conflict can be given up by your decision to see your situation differently, then why wait to make this choice?  Try Lesson 15, The Power of Decision is My Own.  I can decide to forgive, to free myself of the guilt of the past.  The past is over anyway.  You maintain it in your mind in thought, but you can stop.  The miracle occurs when you decide you would rather be at peace.
  7. Give! Give so much that nothing else matters. It is selfish, because it makes you totally happy.  Think of someone else today, free him of the bondage of needing something by giving and learning that you are never lacking anything.  Your brother is you and is waiting for your freedom to be free himself. Lesson 137 states:  When you are healed, you are not healed alone.

4 Reasons to Forgive

If you are harboring resentments with someone, which you probably are, even without consciously being aware of it, you need to go within yourself and ask:  Is it worth it?  Does hanging onto this really help me?

The past is over and yet your body is a memory machine, your subconscious mind remembers everything that hurt you, until you reveal these hurts to yourself by allowing the memory to come into awareness. Beneath the surface could be the root of a pattern that has been troubling you for a long time.  Only when you allow it into your conscious mind can it be healed.  What you keep hidden cannot be healed, simply because it is hidden.  From yourself.

So, for instance, I recently remembered something very significant from my past that was traumatic for me during adolescence.  As I looked at it, I saw that it had affected every relationship I had with a male since then.  It made sense then, that my pain came from me, from my memory of the event and that in the revealing of it, I was able to make another choice.  I could choose to heal this event, to forgive the perpetrator, even for something so egregious as molestation.

I had not consciously ever looked at how this affected my life until now, while I am undergoing a breakup.  The pain was triggered by the breakup of a marriage, and when I allowed it into my memory, I realized how much that event had affected me throughout my life.  Then came the realization that I didn’t have to let this continue.

What truly astonished me was how I had buried it and dismissed it as insignificant, until this moment. I have been on a healing path for many years and this horrendous occurrence had finally come into the present moment for healing!

So, here are four reasons to forgive:

  1. You will discover something about yourself you need to know, that you may not be aware of until this moment.
  2. You allow the buried emotions are caused by your memory, so taking responsibility for the memory, not the event, allows for true permanent healing.
  3. In the revealing of the memory, you open up to the possibility of release forever from the event.  Then the pattern stops.
  4. If you don’t do it, you keep the pattern going.  So, what have you got to lose?  Just painful memories from the past that keep haunting you.

Freedom from the past is worth every bit of pain you have to go through. Otherwise, you will continue to be affected by the past subconsciously and it will color every relationship you have.  I have found that it is  time to love myself and give myself the gift of healing, so that I don’t have to repeat these painful memories again.  It is a gift of love to myself.

It is easy to release the cause of your pain, once it is staring at you and you can see it all clearly for the first time.  You will be given the opportunity to  forgive any time you feel the twinge of anger, the need to judge someone, the desire to hate, or to get revenge.

The path of least resistance is to accept that growth and healing is inevitable.  You do want freedom from pain, and it makes sense then to allow it to occur.

Don’t resist evil.  Don’t resist pain, don’t resist!  Don’t judge yourself for having learned this way, the experience of healing is worth it.

Now it is obvious to me why every major spiritual teaching is based upon this one thing: forgiveness.  IT WORKS if you work it.

5 Steps to Change your Beliefs

If you want to know what your beliefs are, listen to how you talk to yourself all day long.  How does that barrage of thoughts make you feel?  If it makes you feel bad, you are about to open to a new way of living where you choose to feel good and think those thoughts that align with feeling good and feeling happy.  A belief is only a thought you continue to think, something you either have experienced as true for you, or you accepted it from someone else.

Beliefs can be changed instantly. How?

  1. Decide you want a different belief, one more in alignment with the power and will of your inner being of love.
  2. Read a lesson from A Course in Miracles. This presents a new idea for you to embrace and accept.  For example, God’s Will for me is perfect happiness.
  3. Practice the idea throughout the day.  On the hour, on the half hour.  Write it down.  Repeat it whenever anything upsets you.
  4. Imagine how you would feel knowing that this new idea is actually true: For example:  I am the light of the world. How would that feel if it were really your experience.
  5. Accept it, walk around feeling how it feels within your body.  Tell everyone you meet the same lesson silently throughout the day:  For example:  You are the light of the world. There is nothing your holiness cannot do.

There are 365 lessons in the mind training of A Course in Miracles.  Each of these thoughts allows you to change from victim to the powerful creator that you are. The goal of the Course is joy and peace.  A peace that cannot be shaken by anything that happens to you in the dream.

This may astound you to know that you have all power and can heal anything, be anything, accomplish anything you want.  It is a far cry from being trapped in a victim dream.  And we want you to realize that when you decide you want to dream another dream, the universe responds and gives you this new song to sing.  You simply have to get excited about it, become joyful with the possibility of what you could do or be.  Then you can start to imagine yourself doing all sorts of wonderful things with your life, with your friends and family.

You can imagine yourself in any way that you choose. Isn’t that so?  Your imagination has no limits.

Try it.  Love is all around you and is within you.  So imagine that light within you growing into a flow of energy from crown to tailbone and out the bottom of your feet.  Feel it, energize it and accept it as true.

The End of Suffering

You are as God created you, and so is every living thing you look upon, regardless of the images you see.

This sentence from Chapter 31, The Final Vision, states that what you behold as sickness, pain, weakness, suffering and loss “is but temptation to perceive yourself defenseless and in hell. Yield not to this, and you will see all pain, in every form, wherever it occurs but disappear as mists before the sun. A miracle has come to heal God’s Son, and close the door upon his dreams of weakness, opening the way to his salvation and release.”

So the miracle occurs when you ask for it, and you get on your knees and ask to see it all differently, and your misperceptions are healed. The miracle happens because the entire dream is made up by you, and if that is not acceptable to you right now, fine. But know that ultimately, you will accept it, because not to is too painful.

Staying a victim of a world of perception is not really a wonderful or even viable option. It will become too painful to hold onto this idea, because victimization is not happy, it doesn’t work. Accepting responsibility for the thoughts you are thinking is the only way out. Pain releases when you ask for help and accept the help given. The world of love and light opens up in response to your call.

I know because it happened to me.

I was in a state of total despair and depression, and once I started doing the lessons, my entire being changed from darkness to exiliration and fearlessness. Over time, the whole purpose of my life changed from a selfish pursuit of the things of the world, to come alive and to awaken and become totally free, mentally and emotionally and spiritually.

In the act of relinquishment, my ideas of suffering were all burned up and taken from me by the grace of the light all around me, the Christ Mind. It is what I am and what you are, so it is inevitable that you will accept it at some point.

Don’t be discouraged if you have been at this for a long time and still feel pain. I know how that is, but I also know that it is a trick of ego mind to think you have to wallow around in it. You do have choice.

You always have the power of decision at your disposal.

The question then becomes, when? When will you choose to become free, fearless, in a state of love and harmony, knowing who you are, extending that light into the world. When? When you have had enough suffering I suppose.

This does require that you take time to do the mind training, that you spend time in prayer, that you serve your brother, that you give of yourself ceaselessly. Because that is the key to happiness, giving constantly to awaken and help other to do the same. A spiritual focus is imperative to a happy, fulfilled life. Your purpose is to awaken and free your mind if you decide that it is. And why not? Misery and death do not exist. God has already saved you from your little nightmare.

Nothing is accomplished by an untrained, undisciplined mind. Peace does come when all need for conflict is given up. When this happens can be determined by you. How much do you want peace? How much energy are you willing to devote to it?

Repeat this prayer in times of temptation to believe in your suffering:

I am as God created me.
His Son can suffer nothing.
And I AM His Son.

I Could See Peace Instead

This lesson entitled “I could see peace instead of this” is a confrontation. It first of all implies that you are not “seeing” peace. The mind is always upset about something, unless it is at peace. That’s logical, but joy is also peace, so when you are not joyful, you are not at peace.

Be honest. Are you joyful or peaceful right now? Did you know that to “see” peace, means you are the one seeing it or not. You are the one deciding what you are going to see. You have the power to decide what you want to see in every moment. You are telling yourself a story all the time, notice: is it joyful, does it make you happy?

If it is a victim story or a powerless story, you cannot be joyful. So it is time to change your tune and change your story. Sing a different song, dream a new dream.

You only see what you want to see. It is entirely up to you. You project your own thought forms outward from the visual cortex of your brain and call it reality, when in fact it is only a reflection of your thoughts. It makes up your perception and you see only what you project “out there”.

So if you feel anxiety you are thinking fearful thoughts and then seeing fearful images and then you must be feeling anxious. Your constructed situations, personalities or events or “anything else about which you are harboring unloving thoughts” appear to you to be real. They are not, but to you they are! But you are all alone in that. Is it fun?

If you want something different, do this simple exercise. It will help you. Again, it is up to you, do you want it to work?

The idea is to replace those fear thoughts with the idea of peace, then you can feel the change within you. So, if you want to be happy, just do it. Do it for your children, do it for your partner, your friends. Anyone! But do it.

First notice what you are thinking about that feels unlike love: fear, guilt, anger, frustration, anxiety, depression, helplessness, etc. You name it. Write it down. I am upset at…..

Say to yourself “I could see peace in this situation instead of what I now see in it”. Let a door open inside you, let a new thought in, it takes only a moment. You don’t know how to change your mind, of course you don’t that’s why you need help. Let go and give up control.

This is how the mind training works, identify a thought or a bunch of thoughts that you have been telling yourself forever, a belief, and decide you want to see peace instead. Anything that is unlike love will do, apply the new idea, and watch and feel what happens within you.

Now write down the new story you want to tell yourself.

It could go something like this: I am learning to open up, I am learning to let go, I am feeling better about myself and my situation, I am all powerful so I can change how I feel, I am aware that I can decide to see it differently. I choose to see myself differently, I choose to forgive myself of the past, I choose to be happy today, right now. I breathe in love and light from the top of my head and let it fill my entire body. I allow this light to release all negative energies within my body right here and now. I allow them to release out the bottom of my feet and my root chakra. I am aware that I have the power to heal myself.

I feel better now, I realize I can heal myself, I can align my will with God’s Will for me and be happy right now. I am concerned only with this present moment, I can be happy right now. The past is over, the future is not there. I am happy and peaceful and I radiate that into the world right now.

Every experience of the miracle of grace happens in exactly the same way, the fear is released as the love underneath is revealed to you. But you must want this to occur. You have to notice when you are unhappy and ask for a different experience, until then, nothing can change. And stop lying to yourself. Pain, sadness, indignation, anger, stuckness, regret, resentment, hate, fear, guilt are not happy states of mind. They are not justifiable either. You can choose to be free of this now.

When you decide you want peace, you want to see things differently, then you can have a completely different experience of what was upsetting to you just a moment before. Isn’t that amazing?
That is how powerful your mind is, and it is up to you to decide what you prefer, to be upset, or to see peace instead. How to know what you have decided: how do you feel?

The miracle will occur when you decide you want a miracle, the shift in perception comes about when you give up your upsetting thoughts. Why should you do this? These thoughts make up the world you see. You can decide to see everything differently and to be free of your own misperception right now. This misperception never made you happy anyway, so what have you got to lose?

Remember lesson 6 and 7: I am upset because I see something that is not there… it is already over because “I see only the past”. You are not in the NOW. You are projecting onto the world your thoughts about everything you see.

Is this okay with you? Take responsibility, use your mind to free yourself and stop the insane projection of fear onto the world. It is up to you!

This isn’t hard, its just that you have to do it, you have some work to do to free yourself, yes and it takes some effort on your part to notice your thoughts and ask for help. The Holy Spirit is with you, freeing you by showing you the way. The ascended masters are awaiting your call, they want to help you.

USE THEM. They will enter and correct your thoughts when you invite them in. Jesus and the Archangels are with you now and forever.

It is time for the great Awakening, the second coming. It is up to you to be the second coming, and to choose to be in the light and love of your Reality. DO it for your children, do it for anyone you love. Choose to see it all differently because you are worth it! Your world needs you to wake up and be free so you can help. Take the time to do this today and be happy, for no reason. There is no other reason for you to be here anyway. Choose love, choose peace. Align your will with The Creative Source of the Universe.

Love is all around you and miracles and blessings are available to you in every instant! The truth is that love isn’t like anything you can imagine, but you can feel how it changes you from the inside out. Allow it, be the love that you are. Love and light are your Reality. You are perfect as God created you right now.
