How to Begin the Course in Miracles Lessons

What if you don’t know how to meditate or to still your mind?  I know how this is, when I first started doing A Course in Miracles, back in 1989, I had no idea how to meditate.  I only knew that I needed help, I was anxious, depressed and the Course lessons told me what to do, so I followed the instructions.

  • You need motivation:  I wanted peace, I wanted to be free of fear, so the motivation was already in place.  I was seriously in need of peace because I had been depressed for six months and nothing was helping.
  • How much time was required?  Five minutes in the morning, and five minutes at night.  No big time investment here…and yet, within a few months, I was feeling much happier and much less depressed and very confident that I could do this Course.

How to begin to practice A Course In Miracles Lessons:

  1. So, first, just read the lesson, it’s okay if you don’t understand it.  Really.  It’s not important at this stage.
  2. Follow the instructions, do the mind searching for 5 minutes.
  3. Write down the title of the lesson and take it with you on a sticky note or card to repeat throughout the day. Your subconscious mind will hear it every time you repeat the thought to yourself.   This is how you change your mind, one day at a time, one thought at a time.

 

The Course itself is undoing your thought patterns that create fear, anxiety and depression.  It will work if you spend the five to ten minutes per day. Also, as with learning an instrument, the more you practice, the better the results.  So, within a few months I spent probably more than the 10 minutes per day.  I had a lot of motivation, since depression and anxiety were so prevalent in my experience.

As a musician I knew that a few minutes of practice each day became exponential over time and that a scale I couldn’t play yesterday, after working on it for a little while, the next day I could master it without a problem. How?  It is how your brain learns.

Within a few months, I experience changes within myself, I was calmer, I had more hope, more lightness in my mind.  This gave me more confidence and ignited my personal desire to do the Course, I liked how I felt and I liked knowing that my life had a purpose and a structure to it.

Key:  Repetition makes reinforcement.  Results encourage more practice. 

The key to happiness is simply repeating these thoughts that retrain your mind to think differently.  When you begin to feel better, you will have more motivation.  Yes, keep it up and don’t get discouraged if you aren’t completely fearless right away.

Key: This is a universal course in the awakening of your mind that is designed to save you time. 

It’s all laid out for you, you just have to repeat the lesson to yourself…each one can be your personal mantra for the day.  Just try it and see how you feel.

Why do you need a mind training?

Quantum Physics states that cause and effect are not apart. The Law of Attraction states that you get the result of your thoughts instantly. So, you need to free your mind from the fear and negative energy that has bound you to the Earth in a separate state of existence.  Does this make sense to you?  If so, you probably want to get some help, and luckily, you have come to the right place.

First you need to accept a few premises:

  • The Earth is a hologram. You are a body, identified as one, and you believe this whole world of separation is real and you have to survive, suffer and die. This is the dimension of earthly bondage.
  • The good news is: You have all power and you can decide to have a different experience.  You can change from a separate existence from the Creator to one of healing, oneness and peace.
  • So for a moment, suspend your judgment and just assume it is true, you have a choice.  How would you know how to awaken on your own?  You need a miracle.
  • To awaken and to become free from the dream, means you need a mind training, a path or a sure direction that will lead you out of the dark.
  • The first step is to admit that you have a problem, and you don’t seem to have the solution.  Only then you are open enough to be teachable.
  • The miracle is the correction of the original error, it is the universal teaching of spiritual reality and eternal life.  Love and forgiveness is the way out of fear, as these two states cannot coexist.  Perfect love casts out fear.
  • This thought system based upon love is also going on at the same place where you have placed the belief in separation, in your mind.

What to do?  You need a new thought system and a way to correct the error going on in your mind.  

How to do it?   If you read the 365 lessons of the Course, for 10 minutes each day you will open yourself to experience a change of mind so vastly unlike the state of separation, it brings swift healing and awakening that affects you at all levels of mind and body. This then, becomes the correction, or the miracle that brings about illumination.  Being in the NOW means you stop the memories of fear from affecting you.

What will happen? When you apply each of the lessons to your mind you feel and see differently.  If you succeed, and you will each time you truly ask with desire, you will find yourself in a very peaceful state of mind, it will begin to allow you to live in a new reality.

Why do it? There is every reason to do this, because the world needs you to be fearless and to learn the mechanism of release. It is imperative that those on the spiritual path join to free the human mind from bondage.  It is up to you to free yourself and then you can be of service to those who still suffer.

Who I am:  

I am a teacher of A Course in Miracles who is also an energy healer. I was healed of anxiety and depression by doing the lessons of A Course in Miracles and by energy healers.

It was inevitable that I found an awakened Master who showed me that I had awakened, was able to confront the parts of me that were in denial, and confirmed that the truth was within me. Get Rid of Fear Once and for All…

The secret to living without fear lies in one thing only:  your desire to get rid of it. All creative and healing endeavors require you to move through fear.  All desires of the heart to grow, to give and to love in all conditions require courage and faith. Remember, love and fear cannot coexist, as Jesus states this very early on in the Urtext in the section called Fear as Lack of Love:

Fear cannot be Christ-controlled, but it CAN be self-controlled. Fear is always associated with what does not matter. It prevents Me from controlling it. The correction is therefore a matter of YOUR will, because its presence shows that you have raised the UNIMPORTANT to a higher level than it warrants. You have thus brought it under your will, where it DOES NOT belong. This means YOU feel responsible for it. Here’s a proven way to free yourself from fear within a few minutes when it arises:

  1. First of all, know you made it up.  Its unimportant, but you think its real, and you will have fear because you forgot you are a mind, not a body.  It is up to you to release it. Resistance is fear, but Jesus states in the New Testament, resist not evil.  It’s unimportant.   Don’t resist what is silly. Yes, you do experience fear and it will arise when you feel the threat to your survival…yet if you want total freedom and happiness, just recognize it and see it as growth toward freedom. When you accept that it is fear that causes you to grow, you will not listen to it.
  2. Deep breathe for 10 minutes. Fear has no real source because all fear is based upon a lie.  There is nothing to fear.  You have made a state of separation, you think its true, but, you are not the thing that fears, you are the spirit beyond all the emotions. You can breathe deeply for 10 minutes deep into your belly.  Alllow it to release and if your mind wanders, just breathe.  If thoughts appear, just say “oh well” and breathe some more. Try it.
  3. See yourself moving through the veil of fear, or lifting it off you.  Can you imagine what it would be like to easily remove this fear from your mind?  It is work to free yourself from fear, but its better than listening to fearful thoughts. They only make you crazy.
  4. Listen to your heart, not your head.  Get quiet and go within for a moment.  Really let go and ask for help to see the situation differently.  God wills you perfect happiness, this means you can trust Him.  Listen to His voice within you. Ask and listen, and you will receive the answer from deep within you. It takes a little willingness and great persistence to set yourself free.
  5. Have courage to face your fear and go within.  Listening to God’s guidance or the small voice inside, the one that speaks to you softly, encouraging you. Listening to this voice is the only way out of fear forever.  As you get comfortable with the practice, when fear arises, you will know what to do.  Growth is accomplished by releasing fear and learning to trust.

How to create your new life in 8 steps

OK, so when life throws a big challenge your way, such as a break up of a marriage, (which is just what I went through in the past two months), there are some things to do to keep your head above water.

After my husband announced he wanted to split up, I went through very intense emotions and then realized I simply had to accept this challenge.  How?  Well, this is what is helping the most:

  1. Focus on me.  Be clear about what I want, because my life’s goals are not dependent upon anyone else.  Period.  I was amazed at this, because the relationship seemed to be important to me and I was so centered on being together.
  2. Let go of trying to make anything work.  Stay in the moment and allow the rug to be pulled out from under me so much that I would not be able to land in any familiar territory.  Use the experience to grow!
  3. When anger and indignation arise, allow it, and feel it totally.  Then ask for help to see it differently. The ego mind wants to justify its pain, but you deserve better.
  4. Watch my thoughts and pay attention to the voice inside my head.  I have the mind training of the Course in Miracles deeply embedded in my mind and every lesson helps me.  Always and in all circumstances.  Here’s an important one:  I can give up this world I see, (my perception of it), by giving up attack thoughts. Letting my attack thoughts go made me see that I need love now, and attack thoughts do not feel like love.
  5. Ask for help from absolutely everyone I know.  I told them the truth and what happened was so miraculous.  I got money, a place to live, and moved to my home state within 6 weeks. This was not my plan, but once I arrived, I began to realize that I feel absolutely myself here.  The familiar setting, the lakes, the ocean, the mountains and especially the familiar faces all soothe my soul.
  6. Keep open to new ideas and possibilities. I still don’t have work, but I feel confident that I will be led to the exact right place where I can be most helpful.  I don’t know what that looks like yet, so I focus on the feeling of being useful and happy with the work I am doing.  Everyone around me has some great ideas and each one is something I will stay open to and explore.
  7. Keep the faith that God is perfectly seeing me through every aspect of this change. I am taking time off from a very busy life and finally getting some down time.  This is important to let myself heal, to give myself time to open up and allow my beliefs about my life, who I am, and what I want to shift right now.  I don’t have to have the answers.  They come one day at a time.
  8. Follow my heart and trust.  Ask for the guidance to come through in obvious ways so I don’t miss anything.  I visualize myself really happy and then notice what I’m doing.  Happiness is a state of mind and I can feel that at any given moment.  It isn’t about what I am doing, it is about me accepting and loving myself right now exactly as I am. Even with all my insecurities and uncertainties.

20 Ways to Get Through a Breakup

In the midst of a breakup, you can get very confused, or you can use this list of ways to get through it.  This is a way to speed up your awakening and healing from relationships.  Forgiveness is key now but it might feel impossible to you.  That is totally understandable.

My husband announced two weeks ago that he didn’t want to live with me any more.  I have found myself in shock, anger, guilt, rage, fear, frustration and dismay.  Here is how I am getting through it.  It is working for me and helping me to move quickly into joy even in the midst of this painful situation.

  1. Stay focused on you.  Don’t focus on the partner and what he or she did to you. Let them be.  You have no control over them, but you do have control over your mind and how you handle this situation.
  2. Make a list of things you have to take care of now.  It could be to find a place to live, to work (if you work at home), organize a move, decide what possessions you want to keep.  Don’t worry about this too much, you can always replace stuff.
  3. Be very focused on your mental state.  Do the lessons of the Course, read Chapter 17 The Holy Relationship.  We use our relationships to heal and to awaken from the dream of separation.  Use this as an opportunity to get serious and be persistent on your path.
  4. Read one lesson per day, or read the first 50 lessons from A Course in Miracles in short form (reviews) every day. I like the reviews because it can be done in 20 minutes.
  5. Allow the emotions to surface, but don’t wallow in them.  You can read and repeat the key lessons like “There is nothing my holiness cannot do.  I am as God created me.  There is nothing to fear. “
  6. Breathe deeply and use this meditation to release emotions and the tendency to blame.  Panic will not help right now, when it comes up, do this quick 25 minute healing to release the emotional states.  Resentment is not going to help you right now, but it will come up and this will help to let it go quickly.
  7. Ask for help.  Many supportive friends and family will come to your aid, people you never thought would be so caring.  Allow them to help you right now because you need them and it alleviates the loneliness and fear. You are supported by God right now and your friends and family want to help you.
  8. Go within.  Write down all that you are feeling and focus on what you want now  .  Don’t listen to everyone and their opinions, this will just confuse you. Don’t let other people’s breakups or stories influence you.
  9. Write down the “old story”, this what you have been living regarding your self, partner, career, finances, and home.  Now burn it.  Now write down the “new story”, aim high and imagine what you want right now in all these aspects.  This will help to let go of the past and move on quickly and stay focused on YOU, and what you really want now.  Read it over and over every day.
  10. Pray each day for guidance and to be shown that you are loved and taken care of. The universe loves you and is giving you this opportunity to speed up your process of awakening.  Allow the guidance and the freedom from fear that it brings each moment.
  11. The blessing in this situation is:  There is always a blessing for you in a crisis…write it down.  This keeps you focused on what you are grateful for, allowing for more appreciation.   Read it over every morning.
  12. Focus on your abilities and strengths. This helps when the critical judging thoughts come in that eat away at your self-esteem.
  13. Don’t allow the judgments and self-criticism.  Write down all your wonderful qualities and things you have achieved in your life.
  14. Keep an open heart and mind.  When you close down and feel the pain, know that it is changing.  It is important to feel the emotions but know that you are not your emotions and feelings. You can stay open to receive more healing and more grace.
  15. Stay hydrated.  Don’t reach for alcohol or coffee right now…I know its tempting, but it brings your body into stress and your emotions will be harder to calm down.  Drink tons of water!
  16. Exercise.  This really keeps the stress out of your body.  Go for a run or walk every morning for at least 30 minutes. It helps to know you care about yourself right now.  Take care of the body and the mind.
  17. Take a break from your location.  Book a trip and give yourself time to slow down and go within.  I am going to a part of the country I love for 5 days and seeing my two grown boys. I can feel how much I need this right now.
  18. Try this worksheet from Byron Katie for self-examination. A simple four step process to let go of your painful thoughts.
  19. Don’t project all your thoughts onto your partner.  Let them go for now.  Be steady and look at your own mind.  Remember, self responsibility is key.
  20. Give yourself a break, its time to list all the things you love and and remember what brings you joy and do at least 3 of those things each day.

When life choices seem daunting in the midst of chaos, know that there are no mistakes.  You will make choices and then learn from them. Honor your progress and your path right now.  You want freedom and this is giving it to you in ways you cannot fathom right now.

Although the pain will surface, feel it and use it to free you today.  It is helping you to become more compassionate toward yourself and others. Stay humble. Focus on this moment right now.  Not next week, not next year.  RIGHT NOW…it is the only time there is and it is where your healing resides.

If you’ve never done the Course, Start Here

If you have never done the Course in Miracles mind training, start here.  This is what you need to do to begin:

  1. Get a copy of the Course in Miracles book, or read it online  You must have a copy, or read the original Urtext version at http://courseinmiracles.com.  The Workbook is the mind training, the Text outlines the basic principles.  It’s all included in one book which you can get at  Amazon.com or Barnes and Noble.
  2. Read the first 50 lessons, one per day. Don’t skip them, don’t jump around,  just read them one per day, and do as it instructs and move onto the next the following day.
  3. How long does it take?  This takes about 5 – 10 minutes in the morning and again before you go to sleep.  Nothing will occur if you don’t make a commitment to this time requirement. Gradually, more time is asked but it is up to you how much time you devote to this.
  4. Notice what changes.  Do you feel different during or after reading the lesson?  Notice how you feel after four weeks, see what changed for you or how you feel about yourself.  Perhaps you aren’t as easy to be angered, or are less inclined to judge others.  Miracles happen all the time with or without your awareness of them

Common Barriers and Pitfalls

When you begin a new course, there will be certain pitfalls that tempt you to give up too soon and quit before you realize the goal.  You might encounter great resistance, yet if you just continue, it won’t matter, even if you actively resist the ideas presented in the lessons. Reasons to stop might include:

  • I don’t understand what I’m reading.   It’s OK if you don’t “get it”. The Workbook is brilliantly designed to take you from one idea to the next, which is an important systematic approach for the human mind.  Don’t try to understand everything at first. The lessons are not working with your intellect, but with your “right brain”, or the part of your mind that is visual and intuitive, and does not analyze. It experiences, feels and receives information without judgment.  The change of mind occurs in spite of your need to “figure it out”.
  • I don’t have time, I’m too distracted.  OK. So, just do the lesson and search your mind as it directs you to do.  Don’t worry if you feel you aren’t getting it.  It will work anyway.
  • My mind has incessant fear thoughts, I am constantly worried.  All the more reason to do this mind training, to retrain your brain to think differently.  Fear is not actually real, you are making it up.  YOU CAN STOP.
  • I don’t understand today’s lesson.  No problem, I didn’t understand them either when I began.  This is because the lesson is so different from how you think now. Do it anyway.
  • Am I being brainwashed?  The ideas presented I don’t agree with.  That’s fine. You aren’t supposed to agree or disagree, just do the lesson.  Do you want to be free of fear?  Do you know how to get there?  If so, you would be free of fear right now and would not need this mind training.
  • I can’t meditate.  This is not a problem.  The Course is aimed at saving you time, you don’t have to meditate at all.  Just do the lesson and see how you feel. Notice what you notice and see if any change occurs within you.
  • What is a miracle anyway?  A miracle is a shift or change in your perception, a correction of erroneous thinking.  Read the first chapter of the Text, the 50 miracle principles for a description of miracles.
  • I want to just jump around and read whatever grabs me.  Fine but you will not progress with ease.  The lessons are systematically designed for minds like you that can’t follow simple instructions and want to do it your way.  It won’t work for you.  If you were learning an instrument, you would learn to read a few notes before you went on to a major scale.  Then after you master the scale, you go on to the minor scales.  So, don’t try to be your own teacher, you will fail.
  • I don’t think this is for me.  Who else is it for?  You have the book in your hand. It is a sure sign that it IS for you. What do you have to lose?
  • Why is it in Christian terminology? The author is Jesus.  He has written this Course for you to clear up misunderstandings and misinterpretations that have gone down through the last 2000 years.  Jesus is the guide and other Masters were involved, or so it seems.
  • Do I have to believe in the author?  No.  This is not about belief, it is about wanting to become free of fear, guilt and pain.  Then you will find yourself in a totally different state of mind, without knowing how it happened.
  • Can I become enlightened, truly free of fear forever?.  Yes, if that is your desire, you have all power, so you will be undone and the Divine Love of the universe will free you. But you have to do your part.  No one can do it for you.
  • Do I have free will?  Absolutely.  This is a Course that opens up your creative powers and frees you to become fearless, guiltless, doubtless and perfectly happy. You will find out who you really are, which is freedom itself.
  • What is the goal anyway?  The goal of the Course is peace, deep abiding, perfect peace.  This is not understandable to the human mind.  So, your doubts are part of what needs to be undone.
